Extended Care

Extended Care Meadows Dakota

You can’t put a clock on recovery. The appropriate duration of treatment depends on the severity of the disorder and the individual patient’s response to therapy. Mellody House was expressly created for those individuals who need extended care, which typically lasts 60 days after primary treatment.

Studies show that the more time trauma victims spend in a controlled therapeutic setting, the greater their chances are for long-term recovery. Unfortunately, the patients who would most likely benefit from extended care often reject it, citing the added expense and the extra time it would mean away from their family, friends and career. They often claim that they feel “cured” and don’t understand the need to continue therapy.

But here’s why extended care is often critical to recovery: For some patients, the positive effects of primary treatment often dissipate soon after they return to their former lives. The patient may have changed, but their friends, family and business associates haven’t. The old challenges and temptations are still there—and it often takes more time in therapy to fully develop the coping skills necessary to deal with
those challenges over the long term.

The benefits of extended care include:

  • More time to work on a relapse-prevention plan.
  • More time to explore necessary self-examination.
  • More time to incorporate the tools learned in primary care so they become a new way of life—a life of recovery and sobriety.
  • More time to allow patients to transition to the real world through supported outside activities like 12-step meetings, step work, limit setting, and structure development.

At The Meadows Mellody House, we realize that every patient’s needs are different— that’s why we offer personalized extended care treatment options created for the individual patient. To find out more, contact Mellody House at [ifbyphone].
